What you won't find is a number.
Almost every custom insole provider in Hong Kong — the podiatry clinics, the chiropractic centres, the specialist orthotic labs — gates pricing behind a consultation. One of the highest-ranking answers to "how much do orthotics cost in Hong Kong" is still a forum thread from 2013, where a visitor asked the same question and mostly got shrugs.
We think that's worth fixing, so here's the honest version.
Why prices are hidden in the first place
It's not always a trick. There are real reasons:
Genuine case variation. A clinical orthotic prescribed for a diagnosed structural problem involves assessment, prescription, fabrication, fitting, and follow-up. That legitimately costs different amounts for different people.
Consultation-led sales models. Many providers price the assessment separately from the product, so a single number would be misleading anyway.
And, sometimes, anchoring. If you don't know the price until you're sitting in the chair after a 45-minute assessment, you're far more likely to say yes.
Whatever the reason, the effect on you is the same: it's very hard to know whether you're about to pay a fair price or three times what you needed to.
The four tiers, and what they actually cost
These are typical market ranges internationally, converted to Hong Kong dollars. Individual providers vary, and Hong Kong pricing can run above or below these depending on the clinic.
Tier 1 — Off-the-shelf inserts
Roughly HKD 100–400
You pick your shoe size off a rack. The insole was designed for an average foot, and if your foot is close to average, it might feel better than nothing.
What you're getting: cushioning, mostly. Some have a moulded arch shape, but it's a generic arch, not yours.
Worth it if: your feet are basically fine and your shoes are just under-cushioned. Genuinely, plenty of people don't need more than this — and anyone who tells you otherwise without looking at your feet is selling.
Tier 2 — Heat-mouldable in-store insoles
Roughly HKD 750–2,000
The FootBalance model, and others like it. You stand on a heated blank, it softens, and it takes an impression of your foot in the shop in about ten minutes.
What you're getting: a real impression of your actual foot shape, made fast, and you walk out with it the same day.
Why the range is so wide: this is the tier where price and product diverge most. The same basic process — heat, stand, mould — is sold for HKD 750 in one shop and HKD 2,000 in another. Sometimes the higher price reflects better base materials. Often it reflects retail location and brand.
The limitation, at any price in this band: it captures your foot's shape, standing still. It doesn't capture how pressure moves through your foot when you walk. And the blank has to be soft enough to mould in ten minutes, which constrains what it can be made from — mouldability and long-term structural performance pull in opposite directions. Many of these compress noticeably over months of daily wear.
Worth knowing: at the top of this range you are paying scan-tier prices for impression-tier technology. That's the single most common way people overpay in this market.
Tier 3 — Scan-based custom insoles
Roughly HKD 1,700–3,900
A 3D scan captures your foot data, and the insole is built from that data rather than a hand impression.
What you're getting: measurement precision, and — if it's done properly — pressure data showing where load actually concentrates, not just what your arch looks like standing still.
Where the range comes from: the gap between HKD 1,700 and HKD 3,900 for a "3D custom insole" is almost entirely about materials and construction, which we'll come back to, because it's the part that actually matters.
Tier 4 — Clinical orthotics
Roughly HKD 3,400–4,500 and up
Prescribed and fitted by a podiatrist, orthotist, or similar clinician, usually after a full biomechanical assessment, and often as part of treating a diagnosed condition.
What you're getting: clinical judgement. Someone qualified is deciding what correction your specific presentation needs, and taking responsibility for that decision.
Worth it if: you have a diagnosed structural problem, persistent pain that hasn't responded to anything else, a post-surgical need, diabetes with foot complications, or a significant leg-length or gait abnormality. If that's you, go to a clinician. Don't buy from a retail scan — including ours.
The part nobody explains: it's the material, not the label
Here's what gets lost in the price conversation.
"Custom" is not a quality standard. It describes a process, not a result. Two insoles can both be genuinely custom-made from your own foot data and perform completely differently after six months — because what actually determines whether an insole works over time is what it's built from, and whether it was built for your specific problem.
Most 3D-printed insoles on the market today are printed from flexible TPU. It's cheap to print and easy to work with. It's also flexible by design, which is a problem when the job is holding a structure under load. It gives way exactly when you need it not to.
The things that genuinely change the outcome:
The structural element. Is there anything in the insole engineered to hold its shape under your body weight, repeatedly, for years? A carbon-fibre spine does this. A printed lattice generally doesn't.
The cushioning material. Standard foams compress and stay compressed — that's why the insole that felt incredible in week one feels like cardboard by month four. Higher-performance foams (Poron and similar) are designed to keep absorbing impact rather than bottoming out.
Whether it was built for your actual problem. An insole built for someone standing twelve hours a day in a kitchen needs different properties than one built for a runner. Same scan, same "custom" label, completely different construction — and if the provider only makes one thing, you're getting their one thing regardless of which you needed.
How to not overpay
Ask these before you buy anything above Tier 1:
- What is the structural component made of? If the answer is vague, or just "high-quality materials," ask again.
- What happens to the cushioning after six months of daily use? Anyone confident in their materials will answer this directly.
- Is this built differently for different use cases, or is it one product for everyone?
- What's included in the price? Assessment, the insoles themselves, adjustments, follow-up — these are sometimes priced separately.
- Do I actually need this tier? A provider willing to tell you that you could get away with something cheaper is worth listening to.
